How to Pick the Right One: Investigating Tradeoffs among Female Mate Choice Strategies in Treefrogs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two main theories of female mate choice, that females either pick the best from the n closest males (best-of-n) or the closest with some minimum quality (min-threshold), make different behavioral predictions in some cases, yet both are supported by biological data. We present a computational agent-based model that is well-suited for investigating the differences between the two strategies for the biological model organism Hyla versicolor (“gray treefrog”). We show, based on results from systematic simulation studies, that min-threshold overall is the dominant strategy, even though best-of-n has some areas in parameter space where it dominates min-threshold.

Female zebra finches may be influenced by the choices of other females when selecting mates, challenging the view that mate-choice copying should not occur in species with biparental care. Choosing a mate is not a simple business. A female needs a male in order to reproduce, but how does she know which one to pick? How can she find a good mate without wasting too much time and effort? One answe...

متن کاملSexual selection and speciation in mammals, butterflies and spiders.
Recently refined evolutionary theories propose that sexual selection and reproductive conflict could be drivers of speciation. Male and female reproductive optima invariably differ because the potential reproductive rate of males almost always exceeds that of females: females are selected to maximize mate 'quality', while males can increase fitness through mate 'quantity'. A dynamic, sexually s...
